Common Concerns and Treatments

Common Concerns and Treatments

Our skin is amazing and resilient, but it takes a lot of punishment.

The weather, environmental conditions, sun exposure, working conditions, stress, diet, hormonal changes, and aging all affect the condition of our skin. Our expert medical team at Shapero Dermatology is here for you. Our consultation process will identify the cause of trouble spots, help and educate you on the best treatments for today, as well as preventive care going forward. We pride ourselves on giving you the highest level of care.

Acne

Blemishes occur when pores become blocked with oil, dead skin, or even bacteria. Whiteheads, blackheads, and cysts can cause unsightly discolouration and pain while affecting self-esteem. During your consultation, we will introduce you to several treatments. Together we will choose the right treatment for you, giving you clearer skin, fewer breakouts, and the confidence you deserve.

There are several treatments available for skin lesions including:

Aging skin

As we age, changes occur in our skin that become visibly apparent. The sun, our environment, gravity, hormones, and genetics all have an effect on our skin as we age. People tend to notice wrinkles first, along with colour changes, a loss of volume, loss of elasticity, and texture changes.

After the age of 25, collagen, a building block of skin, decreases each year. As we age, the skin becomes less efficient in healing itself and has a reduced immune function. Hyaluronic acid production slows down leaving skin prone to dryness and weakening the skin.

We have solutions!

We offer a variety of treatments for the appearance of aging skin, that do not involve plastic surgery! From crow’s feet to frown lines, marionette lines to lip enhancement, we can help you meet your aesthetic goals.

There are several treatments available for anti-aging including:

Cysts

A variety of cysts exist and, while unsightly, they are generally harmless and usually painless. Depending on the type of cyst they can be ruptured causing inflammation, pain, and discharge. Cysts should always be examined by a dermatologist to ensure they are indeed benign.

We offer a simple minor surgery solution to remove cysts:

Hair Loss

Both men and women can experience hair loss. Hair loss occurs for a variety of reasons, including genetics, age, alopecia, illness, and other stressors. During your consultation, we will identify some of the underlying causes of your hair loss along with the appropriate treatment.

Our Hair Loss treatments include:

Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is abnormally severe and excessive sweatiness of the underarms, forehead, and hands that are unrelated to heat or exercise. It is an overreaction of the sweat glands. It can be triggered by medical conditions or anxiety. Some people who experience hyperhidrosis will sweat through their clothing. In 2004, Shapero Dermatology was one of the first dermatology centres in Canada to introduce the use of Botox for people suffering from hyperhidrosis and has been one of the largest centres in Canada for treating hyperhidrosis.

The minimization of discomfort has always been most important to us. We employ the use of very thin (fine gauge) needles, especially imported from the United States, and the use of ice and dynamic vibration for the hands.

Sweat mapping is done before every underarm procedure to outline the area of sweatiness so that unnecessary areas are not treated, and the dosage can be minimized.

There are a number of treatments available for hyperhidrosis including:

Highly concentrated topical aluminum chloride, and the gold standard, injectable botulinum toxoid.

Consultation for hyperhidrosis is free (covered by OHIP) and the treatment of hyperhidrosis is often largely covered by third-party insurance.

Skin Care

Over the years our skin takes a lot of abuse from both internal and external factors, and changes to the texture or colour of our skin can occur at any age. People often experience dull skin, a dry appearance, uneven complexion, roughness, bumpiness, and other changes in the skin.

We offer a wide variety of products and treatments that can be tailored to your skin’s needs. Some of these include, but aren’t limited to:

Dark Blotches, Age, or Liver Spots

Known as lentigenes, these dark spots on the skin are benign lesions that occur anywhere on the body that gets exposed to sunlight. They appear commonly on the back of the hands and the face. They will not fade on their own over time, however, they are easily treatable.

Dark Skin Marks

In some people, particularly with skin of colour, after inflammation in the skin dark marks can be left behind even long after the original skin condition is resolved.  While generally not a health hazard, it can cause a cosmetic concern leaving you feeling self-conscious. We specialize in treating skin of colour and have several treatments for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.

There are several treatments available for pigmentation and dark spots including:

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common condition that appears as excessive redness of the skin, and sometimes even acne-like lesions.

We offer several treatments for Rosacea including:

Keloids

Keloids are raised scars caused by the overgrowth of scar tissue. They are fairly uncommon and tend to appear more often on people with darker skin. While generally not harmful, they can cause discomfort, tenderness, irritation, and itching. They are a cosmetic concern that can make you feel very self-conscious.

Acne Scarring

Different types of Acne Scarring are created as a result of how the skin reacts to healing during and after acne outbreaks. Acne scarring can result in small pits in the skin to a rippled appearance. Hypertrophic scarring also occurs leaving raised, pink lumps that may itch or otherwise hurt.

While acne scarring is not dangerous, it can seriously affect an individual’s self-image and self-esteem.

We offer several treatments for scarring and keloids including:

Skin Lesions

Skin lesions can reflect a wide variety of abnormal growth or appearance in the skin compared to the skin around it. Skin lesions can include moles, skin tags, or sunspots. Skin lesions should be checked out by a dermatologist as they may be an indicator of cancer or other serious skin conditions.

There are several treatments available for skin lesions including:

Skin Tags, Moles, and Growths

Skin tags are small, soft hanging skin. They tend to appear where the skin rubs with other skin or clothing. They are not dangerous but can make people feel self-conscious.

Moles are clusters of dark, pigmented cells appearing as dark spots. They are generally harmless but should be examined by a dermatologist if they change in appearance, size, cause pain or bleed.

We offer minor surgery for skin tags, moles, and other skin growths including:

Unwanted Hair

Unwanted Hair is a personal choice that can affect your confidence and self-image. Regular maintenance of unwanted hair can be time-consuming, painful, and expensive. If you are ready to say goodbye to unwanted hair for good, we offer long-lasting Laser Hair Removal Treatments using the Gentle YAG Laser.

Our treatment for unwanted hair is:
