We specialize in Skin of Colour
Darker skin tones are susceptible to varying skin conditions. Understanding those conditions and their impacts on the health and aesthetics of our patients is incredibly important. It is equally important to us that we recognize cultural and social considerations toward aesthetics and beauty. In addition to treating thousands of patients over the last 40+ years, Dr. Shapero has also lectured on treating skin of colour.
Our History
Shapero Dermatology began in 1973, as Dr. Harvey Shapero began his career as a young doctor in North West Toronto in addition to going on staff at York Finch Hospital (the forerunner of Humber Regional Hospital) and joining Sunnybrook Hospital in the Division of Dermatology, as well as the University of Toronto department of medicine, soon becoming an assistant professor. Dr. Shapero always enjoyed not only personal patient care, but also teaching, and passing on his knowledge to the next generation of dermatologists, many of whom now practice in the greater Toronto area. Dr. Harvey Shapero was especially happy to see his son Dr. Jonathan Shapero join him in 2011 and become the medical director of Shapero Dermatology.
The practice has grown to become a centre for medical, cosmetic, and surgical dermatology. In 2009, it was one of the first dermatology centres in Canada to introduce the use of Botox for people suffering from hyperhidrosis.
Dr. Shapero’s laser practice began in the dermatology unit at the University of Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital. It was later brought in-house at our Finch Ave West office to better serve our local community, and allow for the safe and effective therapy of all shades of skin color.
Over the years, further modalities have been added such as radiofrequency heat, electronically based microneedling, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), and many other procedures, targeting acne scars, abnormal pigmentation, hair loss, and other concerns, and again allowing for therapy of a wide range of skin tones.
Shapero Dermatology is now the most established and longest-standing active dermatology practice in Canada, having served over 200,000 different patients. We are a family practice and we are a family that cares.
