Founder of Shapero Dermatology

Born and raised in downtown Toronto, where he attended public school and high school (Bloor Collegiate Institute), graduating as an Ontario Scholar. Dr. Shapero then went on to Medical School at the University of Toronto, where he graduated in 1967. On his high school track team, he represented Toronto as a sprinter at the Ontario Track Championships and was written up in Toronto’s sports pages as promising, but went on to choose a career in medicine instead.

Dr. Shapero trained as a medical intern (1967) and in internal medicine at Sunnybrook Hospital, University of Toronto in 1968. He continued his studies in dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit (1970-1973), North America’s largest clinical dermatology training centre, where he had extensive exposure to clinical dermatology, both in busy daily and weekend outpatient clinics and in a large dermatology inpatient hospital practice. At this time he was especially exposed to skin conditions in skin of colour. This is an important area of concern and requires special expertise, as many conditions can look different in darker skin and often must be treated differently, especially with a view to minimizing pigmentary changes. Additionally, some conditions specifically occur in skin of colour. Skin of colour has become an area of special interest, and Dr. Shapero has published papers in this regard, as well as given talks to other physicians and trainees at the University of Toronto, large and small groups of family doctors and specialists at hospitals and medical meetings, Ontario Correctional Services, and has lectured overseas. It has lead to his desire to make certain that our office has available lasers and other procedures that are safe and effective for all skin types. Assistant Professor of Medicine (Dermatology), University of Toronto (1973 to 2017), where his students included many current dermatologists in Toronto and elsewhere in Canada and the United States Fellow of the Royal College of Canada (Dermatology) (Canada’s recognition of dermatological specialization to practice in Canada) Long standing and current Certificant of the American Board of Dermatology (1973 to present), which is the United States’ recognition of dermatologists allowed to practice in the U.S.)
